Decriminalizing Drugs?
Everyone knows what the illegal drugs are and how the people who do illegal drugs are deemed in societies throughout the world. The basis of this can easily be defined from what Rousseau, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke stated in The Human Project; "For them, the effectiveness of the social contract depends on our ability to obtain a satisfactory balance between what we want and what we're prepared to give up to get it. The social contract breaks down when people believe they're surrendering too much or not getting enough in return." Is it not a ridiculous impossibility to have laws to protect us from relatively harmless substances and not from the devastating effects of other substances that happen to be legal? It is well known that tobacco causes nearly a million deaths annually in Canada from cancer, heart disease and emphysema; more than 350,000 people die from alcohol-related issues and its complications is the cause of cardiac and nervous system disturbances. These facts suggest that the public is being falsely misled into fearing the wrong substances and into complacency about hazardous substances by allowing their sale and even subsidization. If drugs were legalized it would have a huge impact on today's economy, it would affect all pharmaceutical industry and tobacco and alcohol industries. Many blame the war on drugs for a host of societal ills, including racial profiling, violation of privacy and civil liberties and a burgeoning prison population. Critics say the only cure for the blight of drug addiction is treatment, not incarceration. But the drug war's defenders say their efforts have brought down drug abuse and the violent crime it engenders. Some of the common arguments against legalizing drugs are the ones that are just the opposite of the arguments for supporting the move to legalize drugs. Legalizing drugs will increase their use which will lead to all kinds of problems: crime will increase; there will be an increase in addicts which will lead to a need to find some way to support their habit; drugs not only harm individuals but also society as society has to deal with homeless addicts, "crack babies", deaths of many people, and an overcrowded court and prison system. There are examples in other countries where decriminalization of drugs does not work.
