The History of Sex
Sex repeats itself through out history time and time again; in ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia they had a system that treated women as sexual servants. Sex was also seen as a means of procreations well as way of transcending spiritual healing. Much like the Egyptians that also believed that sexuality and spirituality were connected to one another. The Egyptians felt that sensuality aroused the origin of life and believed that sex with the dead was part of the circle of life, for example the story of Isis and Osiris. Osiris body was cut into many pieces and scattered along the Nile, Isis Osiris wife spends all her time recovering her husband's body parts including his male member, she later mummifies him and ultimately has sex with him. This shows how Egyptians believed that sensuality and birth could occur even at death. The Egyptians were also well known for their freedom and romance as well as their erotic poetry, they also practiced many forms of birth control which proved to be effective like the Papyrus as a sponge, honey, the acacia plant as well as sour milk. They were also well known for their sexual graffiti which showed satire thru symbols that combined humor, sex, and eroticism together
In the beginning of the 20th century there were many changes. One of these was the invention of the television; movies now functioned as means of sexual education and gumstuck like saint Augusts and Heredotus was a conservative man that fought for the suppression of vice. Any obscene material was not permitted to be sent or received thru the mail. Masturbation was also considered unhealthy as well as immoral, yet prostitution like always was alive and thriving. The Greeks had similar beliefs as the Egyptians they preferred the animal aspect of sex. The men had enormous sexual appetites for women as well as for other men and boys this was called pederasty. The Greeks did not have moral judgment against homosexuals gays were considered normal and believed it to be a rite of passage for boys. The women that were not conservative at this time were referred to as servants of Aphrodite, these women felt liberated in society and they socialized and indulged with other Greek men. The men believed that the women were more sexually driven men and felt that sex was a healthy vital part of life. In the 5th century Heredotus an ancient world conservative historian was shocked when it came to sensuality and sex, he felt that marriage was extremely important and that there were very few prohibitions. The Romans like the Greeks had sexual slaves; they were looked upon as property. Women on the other hand owned property, were opinionated and expected fidelity. But it was not uncommon to find men and women in graveyards and cemeteries which were common places for affairs. Like the Egyptians and Greeks before them the Romans also had effective contraceptives, they used things such as spermicide, gum and an herb called silpshium that was as popular as well as successful it became extinct. In 410 the Roman Empire came to an end and the views on sex began to change. Saint Augustus like Heredotus before him was a conservative man, he began to write about marital sex and felt that people were to shameless.(this is were the missionary position originated from) Japan has many unique beliefs regarding sex as well as many sexual myths including the creation of the island itself. Sex in Japan is actually the backbone of daily life and they feel that sexual practices should not be looked as upon something sinful. In the 7th century women had multiple lovers as well as husbands. The men had prostitutes and believed that these women played a vital role in stress relief. In the 1600's prostitution became legal and brothels regulated as well as licensed. Some prostitutes were known as artists, entertainers even daughters of fallen aristocrats were referred to as Geisha's, young boys that played in theaters were known as kabukis.
