Terrorism and Politics

What events led up to the disaster of September 11th? Being a member of the public I can only draw conclusions from what the media has told us and try to make sense of it all. I believe there were several aspects that led to the attacks on September 11th. The tendency of our governments' involvement in foreign affairs, the inability of the CIA to filter serious terrorist threats, and our nation being a beacon to the world are some of the main reasons why we were attacked. The attacks may not have been unprovoked, but they were by no means justified to kill so many innocent Americans.

For a long time the United States Government has felt it necessary to be a key player in many foreign affairs. Some citizens of our country believe that its our duty to help the smaller and weaker nations. But in doing so we sometimes find ourselves fighting for a cause that can't be won or we overstep our bounds and find ourselves alienated from our allies. Not only does this represent us as Americans but it also makes us a target for those who oppose our politics. There are many nations that share our politics, but it is our nation that stands apart from the rest because of our influences around the globe. Because of these global influences and interests we have painted a target on ourselves for those who oppose our way of life. Small factions like the Al-Qaida want to be heard and the best way for them to do that is by attacking one of their strongest opponents. If they can strike a major blow against a nation like the United States it sends a message to the rest of the world that it could have been any one of us.

There are many terrorist groups in the world today and to keep track of them all is virtually impossible. The CIA must filter through thousands of terrorist threats, reports, and information every day, and knowing what is real and should be taken seriously is a considerable task. After the attack on 9/11 the CIA and the FBI were widely criticized for havi
