Mind Games
The mind is a very powerful tool and plays a huge role in a person's life especially in these two characters. One character is from "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce and the other in "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Although their particular situations differ between each character, one thing is constant, the affects of their mind upon their circumstances. The first character to be discussed is Peyton Farquhar in "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." Peyton is about to be hanged for treason. It was at this moment that a voyage into his mind begins. The other character in "The Yellow Wallpaper" is the narrator, whose name I believe to be Jane. Jane, on the other hand, is trying to recover from being sick, although her sickness is not a virus or infection, but a metal state of illness. She is advised to stay in a room for rest and fresh air to aid in her recovery. There in that room covered with yellow wallpaper, is where her mind journey Begins. The first time Peyton's mind began to wander was before the order to hang him was executed. The second similarities are a little more noticeable and somewhat unbelievable. The orders have been given and Peyton has fallen through the bridge. This causes the noose to tighten around his neck and thoughts began again. He thinks the rope has broke and dropped him into the waters. While in the water "he looked at the forest on the bank of the stream, saw the individual trees, the leaves and the veining of each leaf-the very insects upon them, the locusts, the brilliant-bodied flies, the grey spiders stretching their webs from twig to twig." (517) He heard a shot fired from one of the soldiers, saw the splash from the bullet as it hit the water, and even the man shooting, whom had a grey eye. These thoughts were an insight into what was really going on. His mind was creating an escape from reality and trying to hold onto the last bit of life, even continuing it. For these details seen by Peyton were impossible for any man, especially in his circumstance. At last, Peyton thinks he'd eluded the soldiers and pictured himself trying to find the way home. Not quite knowing where he was, because his mind had created an imaginary landscape. "The forest seemed interminable; nowhere did he discover a break in it, not even a woodman's road." (518) Soon he found a road, "it was as wide and straight as a city street, yet it seemed untravelled." (518-19) When he looked overhead the "great golden stars looking unfamiliar and grouped in strange constellations." (519) Later into the night, he arrived home and was
