After the "tragic death" of his father Willy Loman, Biff intended to follow in the footsteps of his father, leading him to be in a similar position to that of his father. After 2 years of door-to-door begging and pleading for money from old colleagues, Biff was able to pursue his dreams and do exactly what he wanted to do the most; live his own life. Biff's dreams were to return to the east and start a ranch up there where he 'could work with his hands', the death of his father meant he was no longer doing something in order to please others. Approximately ten years later, Biff found he was in an overall better position, yet, was unable to forgive himself for what he put his father through. Unable to face reality with Willy's death, Linda remains at home going through a similar dilemma to that of Willy in which she begins reminiscing of the 'good times'. Linda remains to believe that Willy may simply be on another one of his trips, and this acts as a defence mechanism for her. She simply sits at home all day, living off of the insurance money. She continues to mend her stockings while laughing hysterically at memories which seem to be her only means of surviving, as they seem to provide her with some type of comfort and sanity. Linda refuses to move out of the house out of respect for the hard work Willy did in order to buy the house. Sadly, Linda has become quite crazy as she somehow feels that she is responsible for the death of Willy because she did not support him enough.
