Sir Gawin and the Green Knight

The strict value systems of the early fourteenth century can be seen through the many

famous and traditional pieces of literature written by known and also unknown, mysterious

authors of this time. Through these works, it is noticeable that specific characteristics such as

religious faith, trust and confidence must be distinct in a person in order for them to be

considered a noble and honorable man or woman. The poem, Sir Gawain and the Green

Knight, written by an author unknown, demonstrates that although a person may hold many great

characteristics that are highly recognized as perfect, they are human and able to make mistakes.

knight, friend and follower of god is seen. Through his many actions of being honest and true

to himself and his values of life, the reader is forced upon a false opinion of his character (Clein,

3). There are many incidences in parts one and two of the poem that give readers an unrealistic

opinion of Sir Gawain which make him seem unhuman. He is expected to be flawless of

mistakes and is even related to "a precious pearl" (Gawain, 206). As the
