Lord of the Flies and My Kinsman, Major Molineux
In both Lord of the Flies and "My Kinsman, Major Molineux" the storylines consists of innocent children taken away from the society that raised them and placed in a state with no civilized authority. The children fail miserably even though their backgrounds should have provided a better defense against the instinctual desires of all mankind. Why does it seem that civilization, culture, and breeding yield to man's inherit characteristics when life becomes strenuous? Imperfection and sin are the true masters of men's hearts and emotions not their pasts, education, or upbringing. Civilized authority is the cornerstone upon which the government and society are based upon.It was the conch in Lord of the Flies(). It was the daylight in "My Kinsman, Major Molineux". Both books show the same result without it: the devolution of society. No society can function properly without some form of authority. This is shown in Lord of the Flies after the death of Piggy and the breaking of the conch, representing the destruction of rationality and civilized authority. What came after this event was absolute chaos with total destruction(). When the sunlight of reason went out in "My Kinsman, Major Molineux" fear ruled Robins

So my mother and sister put me in handsome trim, and my father gave me half the remnant of his last year's salary, and five days ago I started for this place, to pay the Major a visit.". Robin During the course of Lord of the Flies the boys themselves changed drastically, or did they? The children started off so innocent () but ended as murderers(). The part of them that was changed by the circumstances was their actions not their nature. Actions in many times can express true nature of a person. Yet in most cases it only shows the outer shell of a man's heart. The side he wants the world to see. Deep inside we know all men are naturally sinful. (). If you wanted a piece of candy at a store but were unable to afford it in which set of circumstances would you be more likely to steal it? A police officer is standing at the doorway watching you and the store keeper cleaning up next to you. Would you be more inclined if there was no one in the store and the shop keeper just left the counter? When you have the shop keeper and the officer there you are much less inclined to steal because of the consequences, but you still have the desire to steal and it is only the current circumstances that hold you back and not your inner nature. If it was your inner nature that held you back then you would have felt the same amount of inhibition to steal with the first set of ci
