Slavery
Slavery has appeared almost universally throughout history among peoples of every level of material culture; from Ancient Rome to the United States in the 19th century, however, in no other culture had slavery been exclusively associated with one race as was the case with black Africans in America. Slavery can be defined as 'the involuntary servitude of one person to another or one group to another' (Cresset Press, 1996, 'The Complete Encyclopaedia'), and in effect divided the union of America during the C18th and C19th. During this time, the 'Americans' in the Southern States had adopted a predominantly pro-slavery stance whereas the 'Americans' in the North had become anti-slavery, putting them directly at odds. Slavery appeared not only as a moral issue, but also affected the nation on an economic, social and legal level. Arguably, the abolition of slavery was the discerning issue of the Civil War (1861-65), but also it adversely altered the relations of the peoples of the United States of America.
