This is a very interesting statement because it involves something that is related to everyone -- school curriculum. When school budgets have to be cut, the music classes are usually the first ones to be removed. Ironically, music is one of the most important areas of study because of its positive effects on students' creativity, learning and growth, and everyday life. Since music education has such an important impact on students' academic and personal growth, it should not be removed from students' learning curriculum. Another important aspect of music is that it is beneficial in everyday life. Music helps with learning other subjects and performing daily activities because making and learning about music involves so much. In Teaching Music, Bear Irwin, instrumental music supervisor for Mill High North in Vermont, said in an interview, "In music we're working in many areas -- the cognitive domain, the affective domain, the physical domain. We synthesize, create and interpret, compose and improvise -- everything related to the rest of life pertains to music education in a sense" (87). Using all of the domains to perform these activities strengthens students' skills to perform other tasks. Another quality gained through music is confidence. In doing all that Irwin spoke about, like creating, interpreting, and improvising, students feel good about themselves. Making something beautiful like music is definitely something to be proud of. Students learn to feel confident in all that they do, whether it be scholastics or sports.
