Dorm Life
Living in a dorm can be a great experience. You get to meet new people and try out things that you either never thought you would want to try, or never thought you would get the chance to try. But while living in a dorm can be an adventure at times, there are those times when it can be hell. Being a musical education major here at Florida State University, I have the wonderful opportunity to live in the music and education dorm, Cawthon Hall. This wonderful residence hall has many benefits of living here. First off, it's mainly geared to music majors, so there are many facilities here for us. One is the practice room on the first floor. This is great because now instead of dragging my instrument over to the music building, finding a practice room that is empty, and then dragging my instrument back to the dorm after I am done. It so much easier to use the practice rooms here in the dorm because all I have to is go get the key at the front desk. I wouldn't even have to leave the building to practice. Other amenities here include a piano lab downstairs in the basement, in the same as the computer lab (which doesn't get much use because everyone here has a computer in the room). One MAJOR disadvantage to living in a music dorm, ho
While living in a dorm, just doing the simplest things can become quite adventure. Doing laundry for example. Back home all I had to do was get the load started and then go off and do something else while my cloths were washing. I could get things done while doing my laundry and save so much time it was unbelievable. But here in college, you cant do that. If I were to just put a load of laundry on to wash and then go to do something else, chances are that my cloths would either get stolen or taken out of the washer/dryer because someone was waiting for it and I wasn't there. So in order to still multi-task, I have to bring whatever it is that I want to do with me into the laundry room. This, in and of itself can be difficult. I have to carry all of my laundry (which when you procrastinate as much as I do, can be a lot) and whatever it is that I want to do. And to top it off, the laundry room here isn't very conductive to reading or studying. First off there aren't any chairs so you have to either sit on the floor or on the shelf that they have for you to fold you cloths on. And secondly, with all the noise in that room it's hard enough to hear your self think, much less do homework, study or read. And yet another problem with doing laundry in college is money! Back home I didn't have to spend upwards toward five dollars just to do a few loads of laundry. Here I must spend at least ten bucks a month on laundry. At a dollar twenty-five per wash and fifty sense per dryer it can get expensive to do laundry. All I can say is that i am glad I don't have all the cloths that some people do or I would go bankrupt. Another reason that having so many people to talk and have fun with is the fact that it can hinder my health. I know what you're thinking to yourself right now, your thinking that friends don't hinder people's health, well your wrong, they can and they do. For months, my friends and I would stay up talking non-stop until the wee hours of the morning. It didn't matter if it was a school night or not. It didn't matter if my first class in the morning was at 8:00 in the morning or at 2:30 in the after noon. None of that mattered, each night for about a month and a half we would stay up until at least 2:00 in the morning every day. Not only did this start to affect my grades, but it also started to affect my health. During that moth and a half I got sick twice. After the second time I realized that I had to stop staying up so late and leading a healthier life. Another big issue that occurs while living in a dorm (well, anywhere away from your parents) is procrastination. Procrastination would rear its ugly little head every once and a while I was back home but my parents would always get on my case to get things done so it was never really all that bad. But once I got into college, away from my parents and teachers who would push me to finish projects and things of that nature on time, procrastination began to show its full force. I now wait until the very last minute to do anything. Living in a dorm, by yourself, away from the people who usually push you to get things done, your on your own. I have started to get better at getting things done on time but it is still very hard. On the plus side, however, living in a dorm with so many people who are taking the exact same class as I am, it can make it a little easier to remember to do things. Because we are all music majors, there are always tons of people around me at all times who are in the same boat as me and if I ever need help I can ask them. A lot of the times I don't even have to ask them for help and they still help me inadvertently. For example, the other day while I was in the laundry room, gabby came in and asked if I had done the math quiz online yet. I had totally forgotten about the quiz until she had said something about it. One thing that crosses everybody's mind when they think of getting a dorm here at college is roommates. To some the prospect of livin
