Ancient Civilizations

Ancient Civilizations: Are they so Ancient?

Throughout history, there have been many things to indicate why contemporary events occur. Not Nostradamus like predictions, merely the fact that current events have occurred many years ago in one form or another. These are issues such as warfare, oppression of women, and empire building. If one were to look at each one of these issues, they would find that each one was present in some or all of the different ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China. That is no surprise being that these societies are seen as so primitive. What is really going to bother you is that we still see all of these issues in our civilization today in one form or another. That is why the connection has been made between the previously mentioned societies with today's society. That is also why similar events may occur today that occurred thousands of years ago. There are plenty of great examples to be shown of how our society resembles that of the ancient societies. There is one myth that comes from the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia that really gives great insight on the way they lived their every day life. The myth is called Gilgamesh. There is also a great book that lets us

In the United States of America, women were not even allowed to vote until 1920. that was only about 80 years ago. This can give a huge clue to someone that women's rights were only recently paid attention to. Just think for a moment about how little of a time 80 years is. That is only a blink of an eye to the sands of time. Of course as most of history has foreshadowed upon us, there are plenty of hints from our predeceasing civilizations of the oppression of women. Take for example the epic of Gilgamesh once again. In this myth, there is a part in which a farmer uses his daughter as a tool to remove Enkidu from harming his livestock. He uses her to "do her womanly things" to him to lure Enkidu away. This means that her father told her to give up her personal interest to better himself. Now this is an extreme version of a woman's rights being violated, however it still clearly shows how the men in the society viewed women. In common day, we don't see this harsh of treatment to women although there are some forms of oppression. These are things such as jobs. It is statistically shown that today men with the identical job as women are paid a higher wage. Like I said, it may not be as extreme as putting your daughter's body up for auction as in the Mesopotamian myth, however it is still seen today. Another Civilization in which the oppression of women is shown is in ancient China. The example comes from a collection of works called "The Way of Chuang Tzu." This book is basically a collection of short stories or poems that are forms of philosophy based on the beliefs of Chuang Tzu, and ancient Chinese Philosopher. Throughout the entire collection, the word woman is faintly used. All of the views based on Chuang Tzu's beliefs are only to be concerned with men. There is a particular poem called "The True Man" that is evidence that women weren't really considered in the thinking process of most men in this time period. This may not directly show the Ancient Chinese oppressing women, but it does indirectly by showing that they only care about men and their concerns.

The year was 1492 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue. This was the beginning of the empire of the United States. Obviously that wasn't the exact date of our empire forming but it was the dawn of a new civilization. No different than any
