Delta
Delta Airlines traces its roots back to 1924, when Huff Daland Dusters founded the world's first aerial crop dusting organization. In 1928 the company became Delta Air Service and on June 17, 1929, Delta began its airline service with the first passenger flights over a route stretching from Dallas, Texas to Jackson, Mississippi. Today Delta Air Lines transports more passengers worldwide than any other airline, through a vast worldwide route system. Some of its worldwide partners include Air Jamaica, British European, China Southern, Malaysia Airlines, and South African Airways. Since the founding of Delta Air Lines, they have stood for safe and reliable air transportation, distinctive customer service and hospitality from the heart. Delta's vision is to build on its traditions and to always meet their customers' expectations while taking service to even higher levels of excellence. In 2001, 104 million passengers chose to fly Delta, more than any other airline in the world. Delta is dedicated to being the best airline in the eyes of their customers. They are determined to provide value and distinctive products to their customers, a superior return for investors and challenging and rewarding work for Delta people in an envir
Delta's financial results for the year ended December 31, 2001 were significantly affected by the terrorist attacks on September 11th. However, it is easy to forget that not all of Delta's challenges began on that date. In May 2000, the Delta pilots conducted informational picketing at Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport and seven other cities around the world. The picketing was a demonstration of pilot dissatisfaction with the failure to reach an agreement on a new contract by the May 2nd amendable date. The Delta pilots' four-year agreement took effect May 1, 1996. Delta pilots claimed they sacrificed both wage growth and working conditions to help the company earn record profits of over $2 billion the last two years. They wanted a superior contract that recognized the pilots' contributions to the corporation's success. Later on in November of 2000, the Delta pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), announced that they will make a joint application with Delta Air Lines for federal mediation. The two parties engaged in mediation for a 90-day period beginning December 1, 2000 to complete contract negotiations. The events and challenges that Delta had to face in 2001 was unlike any they had to encounter in 2000 or for that matter unlike any in the history of aviation. Prior to September 11th, the slowing economy reduced the demand for air travel among both business and leisure passengers. The events of September 11 had an astronomical impact in the airline industry. Our nation's aviation system was called to a halt and the skies became silent and empty. Passengers, crew members, and aircraft were grounded in unplanned destinations. Every airport in the nation was shut down within hours of the event. During the period when airports were closed, Delta earned no revenues but continued to incur many of their normal operating costs. As a result of September 11th terrorist attacks, the business environment significantly worsened. Travel demand declined dramatically following the restart as a stunned nation tried to come to grips with what happened. This had a tremendous impact on Delta's net income, which fell from $897 million in 2000 to $-1,027 million in 2001. This is an astounding 214% difference from 2000 to 2001. American Airlines, who is also a major player in the aviation industry, had a similar fate. They had a net income in 2000 of $813 million but fell to $-1,762 million in 2001. Things do n
