Why Ss There a War Against Pesticides?

Why is there a war against pesticides?

Pesticides have been used for years in the agricultural industry as well as in parks, lawns, gardens and school yards. Pesticides have many harmful effects on our environment, as well as on our children's health. The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that municipalities have the right to ban the use of agricultural pesticides. Banning the use of agricultural pesticides in Canada is ineffective for many reasons.

Pesticides work by physically, chemically, or biologically interfering with a pest's behavior. Numerous studies indicate that many of the pesticides registered for use in this country can have harmful effects on living things other than those they are designed to kill. Pesticides can damage and kill living organisms and they are routinely used by agricultural farmers to control pests that can destroy crops. Pesticides unfortunately are also being found in foods across the country. The toxins are being ingested by humans in the form of fruits and vegetables that still have residual toxins on them.

Alternative methods of farming can be just as effective as farming with the use of pesticides. If food production levels are maintained by using alternative means of controlling pests, overall human and animal health will surely see an improvement. Therefore, people will be able to rest assured, knowing that their lives are no longer in such unnecessary danger.

Applying chemicals such as pesticides is a leading cause of water pollution today. Drinking water can become contaminated or polluted due to a number of factors, not all of them related to pesticide use. As time continues, the amounts of chemicals that are being found in our water are increasing. However, an alternative to pesticides is crucial in order to combat the growing water pollution problem. As naturally, clean drinking water starts with a clean water source, the best way to ensure safe drinking water is by reducing or eliminating pesticides so that they cannot contaminate our water. Research has shown lower levels of pesticide results in lower water contamination. With pesticides being eliminated altoge
