Right from the beginning of the story it was felt that Montresor had obviously been put down constantly by Fortunado. Quoted by Montresor "...but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge." This goes to show that whatever Fortunado had said it had a great affect on Montresor. So great that Montresor was seeking revenge. The character of Montresor is seemed to be very lenient, but everyone has limits and Fortunado had to gone too far. Fortunado seemed to be a man that was well respected by others due to his knowledge of vintage wines. The character of Fortunado seems to think highly of himself, this is thought because he stated a number of times that Luchresi could not tell the difference of Amontillado from Sherry. This is also shown at the carnival when Montresor quotes "...I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you..." This shows that Fortunado has achieved the title of being able to differentiate Amontillado from Sherry better than anyone else. At the carnival there is a feeling of warmth and happiness. Because Fortunado has been drinking and is dressed in multi-colour clothing t
his carnival creates the feeling of relaxation and enjoyment.
If I ever met Edgar Allan Poe I would ask him what inspired him to write a story such as this. I would ask him this because I would want to know if killing someone to get revenge ever occurred to him as the right thing to do. I would ask Montresor what Fortunado said to him that made him so angry. I would ask him this because I want to know if what Fortunado said was really that bad.
Fortunado walked right into the trap. Montresor's plan was almost complete. Since Fortunado was chained to the wall there was no way to escape. Once the freshly mortared wall was almost complete a sad laughter came from behind the wall. Fortunado having no other explanation for the situation he was in, thought that this was all a joke. When Montresor clarifies that this was no joke and that this was Fortunado's deathbed only than Fortunado's fear is revealed. When the torch is put in the remaining aperture, the reader feels the true feelings of hatred and revenge towards Fortunado. Montresor's plan was complete.
