Homelessness
Homelessness is a very complex issue to which there are no simple solutions. Such a problem requires all levels of government to work together in order to find solutions. A recent study in Sudbury revealed that during the week of July 18th to 24th, 399 homeless individuals used the services of social agencies. Thirty-two of these people were children, thirty-seven were adolescents aged 13 to 19, and four seniors over the age of 65. The primary causes of homelessness were due to problems with social assistance and unemployment. The consequences of living on the streets are: dying from exposure, illness, violence or suicide. Even though there are services and assistance to those who are homeless, there will not be an end to the problem.According to Julie Finin Day, "Canada has been whittling away social spending for the past 17 years" (Finin Day 1). In conclusion, there is not enough being done to prevent homelessness. There are still far too many homeless people spending the nights alone on the streets. Homelessness numbers are also growing, it is no longer just young males with alcohol problems. Now there are males and females of all ages and race unable to find a place to call home. It is up to the government of Canada to help end homelessness and if everyone works together the homelessness population will diminish. Though many cities do a lot to help prevent homelessness, all of their hard work is just not enough. For instance, for the first time in eight years the federal and provincial leaders agreed to allocate $1.4 billion dollars towards affordable housing in Canada. They hope that that money will help build some 25 000 affordable housing units across the country over the next five years. Michael Shapcott, a spokesman for the Cooperative Housing Federation of Canada says, "
