Although people who are deaf clearly have a disadvantage compared to the population of people who can hear, changes are being made in our society everyday to reduce that disadvantage in order to make the world more accessible for the deaf. One such example comes from a Southern Baptist Church in Boulder Colorado. An article published in the Daily Camera called "Being Heard" by Paul Aiken, recognizes this church for their commitment in administering a monthly service for deaf people and their families. This article also goes on to explain the relationships that are built between the deaf people in the church and those who can hear. By integrating their service with both hearing and deaf people everyone feels they can worship together within the same walls. . This integration serves as a classic example of how sign language can act as a link between people who have distinctively different forms
of communication. Sign language is more than just a form of communication; it's a necessity for everyone who cannot communicate using the spoken language.
The minister of this church is truly amazing his name is Billy Krahl, he is deaf himself and works as a software tester for IBM, Billy has been teaching the church doctrine for nearly 5 years to deaf and hearing people alike. He believes that by actively including deaf people into the church not only will they become more informed about the bible, but they will start to become more active in the church and may become teachers, deacons, and ushers or even sing in the choir. ["My plan is to spread the gospel to as many deaf people as possible." Says Krahl. (1), Aiken.] Because of the efforts of people like Billy Krahl deaf people have the chance to come to a church and learn more about god by actively participating in his sermons.
