Some of these traces of water might be found frozen in the North and South poles of Mars. The northern cap is said to be due to water ice and the southern cap is made up of a mixture of water ice and carbon dioxide ice. Since Mars' surface has harsh freezing weather, it might not be able to support water there, but it might be able to support water under its surface, and that is where scientists believe water can be detected. Evidence that supports that Mars used to be a planet that consisted of water are the canyons, deep gorges, and surface features that resemble dry riverbeds. Also what has been detected by Mars missions are flood plains, rare gullies on the Martian cliffs and the crater walls, and sedimentary deposits that also point to water being present on Mars years ago.
