Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama as Rosa Louise-Lee Parks. She was raised in her grandparent's house in Pine Level, Montgomery. Her mother's name was Leona Edwards and her father's name was James McCauley, they met in an African Methodist Episcopal Church. James was a carpenter and a builder, and Leona was a teacher at the church they attended and at Tuskegee Institute. Leona and James later married in Pine Level on April 12, 1912. Rosa who was named after her maternal grandmother Rose arrived a year later (2000. . .Brinkley). Rosa's parents moved to Abbeville with James's family because he was tired of Tuskegee. A few years later Leona left to her parent's house with baby Rosa, and soon after her husband followed. James came and left looking for work, once he left for two years, came back for a short while, then when Rosa was about five years old he left again and did not see him until she was an adult and married (1994. . . Two years later 1979 Rosa's mother Leona McCauley died at age ninety-one. Even though Rosa's health wasn't that well she continued to work. She wanted to build an organization to help young people which she accomplished in 1987 when she founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for self development. Rosa says "I hope to give scholarships to deserving young people and to offer courses in communications skills, economic skills, political awareness, and health awareness that will help them realize their highest potential and provide the marketable skills that will enable them to be contributing, productive citizens. I would like them to have that same sense of hope, dignity, and pride that was instilled in me by my family and my teachers." Rosa was an active member of St. Matthews AME Church. Her main focus was to assist in the rituals of baptism. Rosa was a mild Christian women. March 25, 1965 Parks was greeted at the city of St. Jude by father Paul Mullaney.
