My Friends
Why do people have an obsession with fitting into a certain mold in able to be popular? Who do they really want to be? Let's examine this...aren't they just imitating the imitators? Today, and I am not talking about high school, people strive to follow the trend, they strive for popularity; they want to feel cool and accepted. However, by striving for this ever-so-common goal, many do not make their own path, and regret the path they follow. When I came to the United States at the first day, the first thing I did was to call my friends Thien and Tien. They were brothers. We have been friends for years. They used to be my neighbors in Vietnam. We were very closed when we were in Vietnam. I remember we played soccer every day after school. They came to the United States before me, about eight years ago, I believed. I was really glad that I had friends in the America. I couldn't wait to see them. When we talked on the phone, they sounded different, very strange. I almost couldn't recognize them. They used the "F words" a lot. They were not like that when they were in Vietnam. They were very polite
The next day, I was shocked when they came to visit me. I saw Tien had his hair highlighted with his baggy blue jean and a tan top, and tattoos on his upper arms. His brother, Thien had a skinned head holding a cigarette in his mouth. They were suddenly changed a lot. When we sat down and talked, I felt like I just knew them. The ways they talked and their attitudes were totally different than my "old friends", as I knew before. I felt uncomfortable sometimes, but I still tried to have conversation with them. After they left my house, my mom asked, "aren't they our neighbors in Vietnam, are they?" "I almost can't recognize them," she continued. I said "yes," and reminded her by their names. She asked me what they were doing. She also mentioned something that they looked like gangsters. I replied "oh, no, no." She didn't say anything and she went back to the kitchen to prepare the dinner. I knew that she didn't want to see me look like them. The following weekend, Tien called me and invited me to go out. He said that he wanted to take me to a very popular place. Of course, I said "ok". We went to a caf
