Mechanical Engineering

Landscape Architecture is one of the hottest jobs for the year 2000. The outlook for this field is very good ("Landscape Architects" 366-369). They prepare site plans, specifications, and make cost estimates for landscape projects using computer programs or manual design tools. They also do a lot of other work that includes collecting and analyzing data regarding site contours, drainage, and location of structures or roadways. Inspecting landscape work to ensure compliance with specification and government regulations is also done. They have to confer with clients, engineers, architects, and contractors regarding landscaping plans and environmental impact (Choices 2000). They plan and design outdoor spaces that make the best use of the land and at the same time respect the national environment ("Landscape Architects" 366-369). Some of the projects they could be asked to do are: Planning and designing public parks and plazas, parkways and highways, college campuses, golf courses, industrial parks, gardens, ponds, scenic roads, and housing projects. They examine slope of land, existing structures, plants, and trees. They consider different views of the site, shady and sunny spaces, kinds of soil, and utilities. They plan

Some of the personal qualifications may include appreciation of the environment, awareness of human space needs, and love of the outdoor work. These could never be required, but if you do not have these qualifications this may not be the right job (Landscape Architects). Landscape Architects should also have good personalities. They have to be able to work as a team and be able to work under and above people. Imagination and creativity also help in the job. Their personality should include artistic, realistic, and investigative (Choices 2000).

Mechanical Engineering Technicians may need to have some personal qualifications to make their job easier and run more smoothly. They must like mathematics and graphics. These subjects take up most of the tasks that these people do. They also must be able to explain their ideas. They will need to talk with clients and for this reason they will also need to interpret, analyze and record facts in tables, charts, drawings, and writings. They will also need creativity to come up with ideas for tools, machines, and equipment. They must also be able to work as a team and come up with ideas and concepts (Mechanical Engineering Technician).

Large firms usually employ them. These firms may specialize in robotics, heating, and air-conditioning. They may also work for public utilities (Mechanical Engineering Technician).

Landscape Architects usually work a standard 40-hour week. However, if they are self-employed they may have to work weekends to meet schedules. They work year-round and get good salaries and benefits. The starting salary range in 1997 was from $18,030-$26,959. That is pretty good. After 12 years of experience the salary range is from $32,200-$48,147. And, after 24 years of experience the average is $43,465-$64,991. Working privately does earn more, but more hours usually need to be put in. A private Landscape Architects starting salary is $40,000. Working for the federal government could also be a plus. The starting salary for that position is $49,570. The average hourly wages for a landscape architect in Iowa is between $13.00 and $20.00. Working for a firm also has some advantages. You will receive benefits such as health insurance, paid vacations and holidays, and sick leave (Landscape Architects).

Iowa State University would be an exceptional choice for a Landscape Architect. It is a four-year college. There are 8,914 applicants and only 3,779 of them are enrolled, so the entrance difficulty is moderately difficult. About half of the enrolled scored between a 24 and 29 on their ACT's. It costs $2,666 for tuition and $3,958 for room and board, so total cost to go to this school is $6,624. There is a ratio of 14 students to every 1 teacher. This ratio is pretty good, and classes will be smaller to make learning easier (Choices 2000).

Communication skills are very important in this field. Also it is important to have creativity. It would be impossible to come up with designs for entire buildings if the Architect had no sense of creativity. They must also be concept-oriented. They must be able to focus on the task at hand. They must also be able to be a team member. They are going to need to work with landscape architects, engineers, contractors, and clients so they must be able to act as a team. They must also be artistic. They will need to do drawings, which takes a lot of artistic abilities. They also must be investigative and realistic (Architects).
