Joseph McCarthy: America's Demagogue Culture is the way a group of individuals define themselves. Behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought combine and evolve to create a groups's culture. The United States boasts of many individuals who have made significant contributions which have shaped the beliefs and ideals of modern society. Through his attacks on communism, Joseph McCarthy negatively impacted American culture by employing unethical tactics, by discouraging the public to use the First Amendment, and by discouraging producers and authors from publishing radical media. Joseph McCarthy employed unethical tactics against others in his ruthless attacks on communism, negatively impacting individual lives and American culture. Even before he engaged in his attacks on communism and his enlistment in World War II, he used his smear tactics against other politicians. When running for circuit court judge in Wisconsin, he attacked his opponent Edgar Werner. Many were appalled at the way he smeared Werner, publishing false media claiming that Werner was 73 and senile. This claim was obviously false, as Werner was only 66. Through his attacks on communism, Joseph McCarthy negatively impacted American culture by employing unethical tactics, by discouraging the public to use the First Amendment, and by discouraging producers and authors from publishing radical media. Commonly referred to as one of America's worst demagogue, McCarthy ruined life for American's with loved ones lost and dreams not fulfilled. McCarthy employed the same tactics Hitler used, learning from Mein Kamf, to gain power over the masses of the people. We can look back on McCarthy and see him for what really was, but will we fall for another McCarthy when the war on terror gets out of hand? rupt, helping him when this election. Already, McCarthy was exhibiting his willingness to hurt others to gain power. After WWII, he ran in the Republican primaries against La Follette for senator of Wisconsin. McCarthy again smeared an opponent, this time because La Follette did not enlist in the armed forces, even though La Follette was too old to join the military. McCarthy again attacked an opponent's finances, claiming that La Follette was guilty of war profiteering. La Follette had actually invested in a radio station. La Follette lost the primary, and another life was ruined, as he retired from politics and committed suicide (Joseph McCarthy 1-2). Because of his harsh attacks on others, speaking against McCarthy in the Senate became political suicide. Politicians were not the only people he ruthlessly attacked with his smear tactics, which were similar to Nazi tactics (Joseph McCarthy 5-6). When up for reelection in 1950, he gave a speech claiming that he had 205 names of security risks in the State Department. The next day, after a newspaper published this, he denied ever having said that and furnished fake speech records showing he said he had fifty-seven names (Matusow 19-20).
