John Roebling designed and built the Brooklyn Bridge as a luxury to the New York people at that time period. When the river froze over one winter day in Manhattan the people walked across the river to Brooklyn, and the people noticed how great it could be if they could have a bridge connecting the two islands. John Roebling designed the Brooklyn Bridge in a way that he saw fit, to be able to span the river.
