John Roebling designed and built the Brooklyn Bridge as a luxury to the New York people at that time period. When the river froze over one winter day in Manhattan the people walked across the river to Brooklyn, and the people noticed how great it could be if they could have a bridge connecting the two islands. John Roebling designed the Brooklyn Bridge in a way that he saw fit, to be able to span the river. Though grand in design, Roebling did it for New York, regardless of how the bridge is looked at now, and even following its completion were the bridge is looked at as a great monument, landmark, and as a object of pride.
