I first got involved with cheerleading six years ago. Early on I began to develop leadership skills that have continued to grow through the years. I was placed on a large squad with two selected captains. I soon learned that even though I was not a leader of my squad, I was a leader for my school. What exactly does the word cheer"leader" mean? Just by looking at the word itself, it takes a leader to be one. Webster defines a leader as one who leads, but who is to say that that definition is complete? Anyone can be outspoken, have a cheerful attitude, smile real pretty, and maybe even have a lot of guts, but to any cheerleader a leader involves much more. A true leader respects others, has good judgement, is faithful to the squad, has strong and uplifting confidence, and has the ability to put others first when making decisions that affect the entire squad. Sometimes factors such as pride and shyness conflict and put a cheerleader to the test. She has to be willing to let go of personal inhibitions and open up to show the crowd how excited and enthusiastic a cheerleader can really be.<
