Though Ned may represent the writer, or someone he knew, I would wager to say that everyone, or at least most of us would find if we looked deeply, a bit of him inside ourselves! By swimming through each pool, he is taking us through a segment of his forgotten life one piece at a time. From the way Ned thinks he still is, we understand how he once was. However, as the seasons change, like pages in the story about him, so does Ned's life.

The story begins with a picturesque scene of family, hearth, rest and contentment. Neddy Merrill is a family man casually loitering by a friend's pool with his wife and close friends on a sunny Sunday afternoon. He has not a care in the world. Ned gets up on a Sunday morning with only the mild dilemma of having drunk too much the previous night; a worry not requiring too much attention or concern on his part. Yo
