The story begins with Jurgis, who along with his family has come to America in search of the "American Dream"; every man has an equal opportunity to own property, have a home, have a family, and put food on the table. In America, Jurgis believes that being rich is not having lots of money, but rather having the ability to live a free man's life of family, property, and the everyday comforts of a home. Jurgis believes through hard work and honesty he can gain this dream. These goals and expectations are not unreasonable to Jurgis because all he knows about America is that it is the home of the free man. He will learn quickly that the America he has heard about is not what it was said to be.

The immigrants realized that the idea of equal opportunity was impossible to find in America. People such as Jurgis found that hard work and honesty are not enough to help them attain their dreams. Jurgis and his family all seek employment at different times and they all work very hard. Despite their hard work and honesty the family looses their home and due to the stress and pressure of their jobs their relationships with each other are in shambles. The only people that seem to get ahead are those that were born into richness or cheat their way to the top of the economic ladder. They are the businessmen, politicians, and criminals.

This story has just as much relevance today as it did during the era in which The Jungle was written. We find poverty stricken nations across the world today. These nations are abused by corporate businesses which hire poor people for low wages to allow the big corporations to make a little more money. Many of these laborers must still endure terrible working environments and often may not have proper housing, clothing, or nutrition. It is clear that The Jungle is very relevant to us today as it reflects the working world in and outside of America today.
