Disney Land, America
In the essay "The City of Robots" Umberto Eco describes his experiences at Disneyland. At the end of his essay Eco claims that Disneyland is America's "Sistine Chapel"-a place where our true national values are shown in artistic form. I agree with this claim. To show why I agree with Eco's claim, I am going examine both the Sistine Chapel and Disneyland. I want to show what they are and what their values mean to each nation, because by doing so one will begin to see that they are not so different after all.The Sistine Chapel is a famous chapel in the palace of the Vatican in Rome. The chapel was built between 1475 and 1483, in the time of Pope Sixtus IV. The chapel is a simple rectangle in shape and is not very big only 134 feet long, 44 feet wide and 85 feet high. A flattened barrel vault, with little side vaults over the centered windows, roofs it. The thing that makes the Sistine Chapel so amazing is its walls and ceiling. On its walls and ceiling are some of the greatest art ever produced in the Western world. The wall paintings were painted by Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, Luca Signorelli and their workshops, which included Pinturicchio, Piero di Cosimo and Bartolomeo della Gatta
. Michelangelo Buonarroti was commissioned by Pope Julius II della Rovere in 1508 to repaint the ceiling; the work was completed between 1508 and 1512. He painted the Last Judgement over the altar, between 1535 and 1541, being commissioned by Pope Paul III Farnese. As one can see the Sistine Chapel and Disneyland share allot of the same values. They both have a story to tell its visitors. Both the Sistine Chapel and Disneyland leave visitors with a feeling of amazement. And both of them let its visitors lose touch with reality. Even though they may do it in different ways, the Sistine Chapel and Disneyland share these three basic values. Walt Disney created Disneyland. He wanted to build the park so kids and their parents could have a place to have fun together. His first thought was that the theme park should be eight acres at a place near Burbank Studios, California, but he decided he needed a place much bigger. He later found a 180-acre piece of land in Anaheim, California. Walt Disney had everything he wanted in his theme park on paper. He designed a place called Main Street, USA, at the front of the park so he could relive a typical turn of the century city Main Street. Walt also had an Adventure Land in his theme park so people could travel to exotic places. He designed a place called Frontier Land to replicate the pioneer days of the American frontier. Walt created Fantasy Land in the park so people's dreams could come true. Walt also created a place called Tomorrow Land in the park so people could look at marvels of the future. The Sistine Chapel holds many values for its nation. It is the place where many famous ceremonies are held. It is also the chapel where the Vatican's vote for the new pope. T
