Genghis Kahn

Mongolian Empire was known as a fierce fighting force before the birth of Genghis Kahn. However, after Genghis' inception as leader, the Mongolians united and became the greatest empire in the world. Genghis Kahn, with his vision and military might, changed western civilization more than any other figure in history. What people he did not befriend, he enslaved or killed. If storybooks existed at the time of Genghis Kahn, the might tell a story like the one below.

Due to the temporary overcrowding of the family dwelling Ishmael slowly lies down on the rock hard earth outside of his tent. He adjusts himself so that he is lying perpendicular to the campfire with his head resting on his hand. He gazes up at the stars in the heavens and is in awe at the peaceful night sky. It seems to grow brighter and clearer as the crackling fire starts to dim. Just as Ishmael is about to lose consciousness and drift away into a sleep-filled bliss, he is suddenly awakened by a thunderous sound in the distance. He and a couple of his fellow clansmen glance up at the moonlit horizon and notice that it is perfectly clear and not a cloud is in the sky. As the men continue to listen to the thunderous roar, Ishmael stands; arches his back and st

Over the next few years, Genghis battled the Tartars in small skirmishes until the year 1202. This battle against the Tartars would be one of Genghis' greatest and probably one of his most remembered military campaigns. The result of this conflict was complete and total extermination of all people that were affiliated with the Tartar clan. Genghis at this point had finally avenged the death of Ambakhai, and most importantly, that of his father. In 1206, after many more battles, as well as, the death of his chief rival, Jamuka, Genghis was claimed the undisputed ruler of the Mongolian empire. Later that same year, his people proclaimed him the "Great Kahn". He was now one of the most authoritative rulers in the world, and he had the most powerful military force to support his new title.

Yesugei left the Onggirat tribe and began his long journey home. Along the way Yesugei came across a group of men sitting around a campfire feeding themselves. The men recognized Yesugei as the leader of the tribe that had defeated their own Tartar clan in battle and know claimed ownership over them. Yesugei however did not know who they were. Plotting revenge over their new ruler, the placed poison in a glass from which Yesugei was drinking. Yesugei made it back to his clan before the poison took full affect, but he was near death. Knowing that he was going to die, he sent a messenger back to the Onggirats for his son Genghis to return home immediately. Yesugei died before the future ruler could return. After the death of Yesugei, his followers deserted Genghis and his remaining relatives. The family was left to fend for themselves.

Before the 1219 military campaign Genghis had asked the emperor of XiXia for an army to help conquer the Mongolian enemies. He refused, only saying:

It was said that when Genghis was born, he emerged from the womb, clutching a blood clot about the size of a knucklebone. His father and mother viewed this as a sign, that if he lived, he would someday be a great hero among his people.

Every warrior was also equipped with a composite bow made of wood, sinew, and slivers of horn. The warriors carried up to three quivers with a variety of arrow placed in each one. They had arrow designed to kill, wound and whistle. The "whistling" arrows were designed mainly to scare or confuse their enemies during battle. Each warrior also carried a long lance, with a hook or razor sharp point on the end, as well as a dagger strapped to one of his arms. These weapons could be used to fend of attacks or be thrown at an enemy from a short distance.
