Zora Neal Hurston

In Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, there are many strong emotions conveyed to the readers so that the overall message of if a person is in love that love can change them time and time again making the best at times and the worst at times. Throughout out the novel the character of Janie went through many changes as she moved on in her relationships. As the novel progressed she moved from young naive to socially active but obeying wife to a free spirited women ready for it all. This is why this novel is so popular because it expresses the changes many women go through in love. These changes include many big events and changes in Janie's life. Her life is complicated and requires someone to make her feel free again and it does happen at one point but it doesn't start off that way.

In the beginning her first husband was very protective and she was very naive. They got married and at the time Janie didn't love Logan but her Nanny told her that after they were married she would love him. She soon realizes that she truly doesn't love him and she comes to her Nanny to ask her why doesn't she love him yet, "Cause you told me Ah mus gointer love him, and, and Ah don't. Maybe if somebody was to tell me how, Ah could do it


Teacake had two bad attacks that night. Janie saw a changing look come in his face. Teacake was gone. Something else was looking out of his face. She made up her mind to be off after the doctor with the first glow of the day. So she was up and dressed when Teacake awoke from the fitful sleep that had come to him just before day. He almost snarled when he saw her dressed to go (Hurston 181).

(Hurston 23). " The Nanny goes on to explain how fortunate to have a man of that caliber with a house paid for sixty acres of land and how she has money with him. Janis soon realized many things about herself marriage and life and love in general, "The familiar people and things had failed her so she hung over the gate and looked up the road towards way off. She knew now that marriage did not make love. Janie's first dream was dead, so she became a woman (Hurston 25)."

Janie moved on she couldn't handle it any more. She did this because Logan hit her and that brought of the strongest emotions in any one. Hurston conveys the message through these emotions of a woman being hit. Next thing that happens is she falls for Joe still naive but stronger Joe wins her heart when it was weak. Joe was a popular man and became mayor of the town; this made Janie very excited and happy for him. It seemed to bring Janie a new light on things and being the mayor's wife made
