Intercultural Communications
A detailed Summary of Intercultural Communications
1) This class has enabled me to open up my mind and thoroughly understand different cultures. Culture is an accumulated pattern of values, beliefs, behaviors that are shared by identifiable group of people with a common history and verbal/nonverbal symbol system. By understanding different cultures I feel that I am able to communicate better with people, especially ones that I am not familiar with. This also helps me to break the uncertainty avoidance when talking or interacting with people. This class has helped me understand the differences between the 5 cultural dimensions: Individualism/ Collectivism, Low Context/ High Context, Value Orientations, Power Distance and Uncertainty avoidance. Discussing different cultures in class such as Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, African Americans and Native Americans, these discussions have really opened up my eyes to other cultures and people's beliefs are apart of them. I have gained much more knowledge about the world because I have taken this class. Just having the tea in the mornings allows me to think about other cultures and communication that goes along with it.

3) As mentioned before, the movie Fear and being able to understand more of other races and racism itself will remain with me for ever. One other communication concept that I find myself using a lot is "uncertainty avoidance." I was in the multi-cultural group that got to teach the children about different cultures. I found that uncertainty avoidance is very common and communication has a much better flow from sender to receiver is uncertainty avoidance it reduced. For the children, I found it easy to reduce this, just by smiling, introducing yourself and sending out a good vibe and a good welcoming personality really captured the children's attention. By reducing uncertainty avoidance the children were able to freely ask questions and really understand the knowledge being passed on to them.
6) I would have liked to discuss more history like the holocaust. I find the holocaust very interesting and the movie that one group showed from the museum of tolerance really made me interested. I think I will have to go to the museum and check it out myself one day. By understanding more of the cultural backgrounds people had, I think that would help me under
