The short story "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, discusses the trials and tribulations a marriage can bring. The character in the story Mrs. Mallard led a sheltered and unhappy life. Freedom enticed the Mallard residence with the passing of her husband and the irony of the story pictured the years of happiness to come; yet in an instance it was taken away from her. What seemed like a miracle came to a fatal end.

Mrs. Mallard was portrayed as being lonely and unhappy in her marriage. Although the story doesn't clarify or explain in details her loneliness, her reaction towards her husband's death reveals her true character. Mrs. Mallard had been trapped in a relationship for so many years she had forgotten the enjoyment of life. It is amazing how a person can forget how to live and enjoy ones freedom. In Mrs. Mallard's case, she didn't forget. Perhaps it was only a mistake or the simple feelings someone might have for the other and the unthinkable happens. Soon the couple is married and after a few years the love is gone and the misery begins. "Yet she loved him- sometimes, often she had not," we can't be sure that she never loved him but her actions said it all. She gave up the love her husband had for her at a chance for freedom.
