A detailed Summary of What are They Thinking
For the past few years Mayor Tom Murphy has been trying to improve Pittsburgh's economy. He has been working to bring people back into the city. For example, the city of Pittsburgh has been highly advertising for events such as Light up Night, the Regatta, and the Forth of July celebrations just to name a few. The city of Pittsburgh parking garages are offering free parking on nights and weekends during the holiday season. All this in an attempt to attract people to the city.
Now the mayor is trying to impose a higher alcohol tax as well as cut backs on Public Safety Bureaus. This raises many questions in my mind. The main question is, will the Mayor end up hurting the city's economy after trying for so long to boost it?
The Mayor is trying to impose a ten percent tax increase on all alcoholic beverages. Why would people want to travel to the city if it is going to end up costing them more money? Most people when making a day of shopping in the city either start or finish their day with ge

The Mayor also wants to impose twenty million dollars in public safety cuts. This would be done in part by merging fire and medic bureaus. Mayor Tom Murphy also wants to extend the firefighter's work week from 42 to 54 hours and also reduce the number of fire stations. Another question this brings up is how does this affect us in light of September 11th? Now more than ever Public safety is a huge concern. How is this going to boost the economy if it puts us in harms way.
There has been recent emphasis placed on recruiting new college graduates to remain in the city and look for employment at home instead of re-locating to another city or state. There must be some incentives in order for this to happen and I don't see them. All I see is more taxation and fewer benefits.
I do realize that the city is in financial trouble and something has to be done, but I do not think that raising taxes while cutting back on crucial emergency workers is an answer to anything. These recent proposals s
