Biblical Story: Fact or Fiction
Although many Christian people believe the story of creation as told in Genesis is the truth, science has come up with an alternative theory on how man came into existence. The word creation comes from the Greek word for science that is philosophically defined as "the production of an existing thing out of no preexisting material and by no emanation from the preexisting self."(Encarta "Creation") In its most simplistic interpretation, Greek science means that creation is the making of something out of nothing. This idea is expressed numerous times in stories in an attempt to make sense of how the world was created and how we got here. The story of Genesis is one such story.In Genesis everything is related, from the story of creation to the history of the time before, during, and after Christ to God. In medireview times, the Church of Christ accepted the story of Genesis as the "complete story of creation," (Encarta "Creation") and up until the nineteenth century when the "scientific" theories were advanced it was the acceptance of most Jews and Christians. The issue that "die-hard" Christians spend the most time defending is that of the "world and clock" argument. (Encarta "Creation") According to science the world began with the Big Bang about 15,000 million years ago, with the planets and sun beginning around 4,600 years ago. The Christian people say that there is no way that one can figure out the length of a day. In Genesis chapter five Adam is said to have had a son at age 187 and to have died when he was around the age of 969. The theory behind this is that God made the world in six long series of time called "epochs." Each of these "epochs" lasted several million years. The creation of day and night would be during the first "epoch." In the second "epoch" heaven was created. During the third and fourth "epoch" the Earth, the seas, planets, the sun, the moon, and the stars were all created. In the fifth "epoch" the creation of sexual reproduction began with the creation of birds and fishes. Science on the other hand says that sexual reproduction began after the creation of bacteria. Fishes and birds came later. In "epoch" seven God rested, creation stopped. Science goes into detail about the first reptiles, the first birds and so on. It states that the modern humans evolved about thirty-five thousand years ago. The times of science and religion do not agree with one another. The
