Churchill, Sir Winston Leonard Spencer, British politician and prime minister of the united kingdom, widely regarded as the greatest British leader of the 20th century. Churchill is celebrated for his leadership during WW2 . His courage, decisiveness, political experience, and vitality gave him what it took to lead his country through one of the most desperate struggles of British history. Winston's public life extended from the reign of queen Victoria to the cold war. When Churchill returned to England he had become a hero and was elected into parliament. He began as a conservative but his mind was changed after seeing the views of the liberal party, and in 1904 he changed parties. After the liberals won the election in 1905 he was appointed undersecretary at the colonial office, where he was in charge of issues concerning Britain colonies. In 1908 he became president of the board of trade, and in the same year he married Clementine Ogilvy Hozier. They had 5 children, one who died at an early age. In 1910 he became home secretary. In 1911 prime minister Herbert Henry Asquith made Churchill first lord of admiralty with the job of keeping the fleet on standby in the case of a war, which was certain to come because of political upset throughout Europe. On July 28th Austria declared war on Serbia, and the fleet was called into its station at Scapa flow, and within days they joined the conflict and remained a dominant presence in the north sea. When WW2 broke out Churchill was given lord of admiralty once again and built up Britain's fleet for the upcoming battles. After Chamberlain's resignation Churchill was asked to step in to take his place as prime minister and set the tone of his leadership.
