Society Goes Pop
In the realm of the music industry, pop music reigns. It seems as if every week another "pop star" is born, and true music lovers observe these teenage sensations and ask what makes this guy or girl so much different from all the others? This is a question no one can really answer, because in the last decade or so there has been no difference. Pop music does not change. But this is where it gets interesting. It's not even about the music anymore. When listeners here "pop music," they can automatically associate the genre with good looking teenage kids who may be able to carry out a note or two. This association sparks controversy. And controversy creates problems. Rarely do pop stars play instruments, and most are not very good vocalists. So, what does it take? What exactly does it take to become a "pop star"? It no longer matters if you have a good voice or any musical talent at all for that matter. In reality, you need no talent. If you have a bright smile and sex appeal, you are a potential pop star. Due to the media's superficial advertisement and lacking creativity of pop music, it cannot truly be appreciated let alone held on a pedestal above musicians trying to fulfill their dreams playing their own music and
Pop music is catchy and certainly appeals to a vast audience, but it is not reasonable to ignore all other styles of music by flooding society with the sound of pop. Music listeners are missing out. There are some great bands out there yet to reach the masses, but when they do, pop is in for a rude awakening. Thanks to stations like MTV2, who plays some music you would never hear on the radio, the underground scene is surfacing a bit. The trend has to catch on, because a world of pop music is a world of fake people always trying to be happy. Life is more than happiness unfortunately, so why not express it? Rock music appeals to the emotion, and if given the proper chance, it will show everyone that it's not all about the look and the image. It's about the feeling behind the music. And without that feeling, the feeling of being alive, the feeling of reality as it falls around you, the music has no meaning. In the mind's eye of those who truly know and love music, pop music can hardly be appreciated, because it not only lacks originality, it requires no talent. So why is it everywhere? How can people appreciate teenagers with good looks who either don't write their own music and have it composed by a producer or simply copy someone else's music? We hear artists say, "I finally got a chance to write some of the songs on the CD this time" all too often. That is not the way it should be. Even when rock bands play covers of other bands' songs they throw their own little twist to it. Pop stars do whatever their told. Is that worth praise? As a musician, one should take pride in his or her music. How can a pop star take pride if he or she has, for the most part, nothing to do with the song? Realistically, rock music takes more effort to produce simply because it's more than pushing buttons. But thanks to the media, that doesn't really matter. No one really cares to even think about the amount of time and effort it takes to write song after song, while still trying to stay true to a style, because the media indir
