The events of September 11th came as a great shock to everyone, save the terrorists who were responsible for what occurred that morning. However, it was a series of events that could not be stopped - a situation that suddenly arose from the crisp, early morning air over New York and forever changed people all over the world. A great many people lost family members, friends, and loved ones that morning - however, a question even greater than that loss of life also ascended from the events of that day more than a year ago.

It is things like this that make me wonder how Americans will react to the policies that have and will undoubtedly be put in place in regards to September 11th, 2001. It is my personal fear that the people of this country will be slowly led to accept policy that at first seems little more than a series of reasonable inconveniences - a fair trade for the reassurance that such terrorist events won't happen on American soil again - without stepping back and examining exactly what core values and principles of the American ideal are being sacrificed in the process. Beyond technological advancement, America offers a set of enriching freedoms that are available nowhere else on earth. These freedoms have nurtured what is arguably one of the most prosperous economies in this history of mankind, and has provided the highest standard of living available to anyone on earth.
