Cloudstreet - Findings in the Novel

A detailed Summary of Cloudstreet - Findings in the Novel

There are several events present in the novel that are either un-explained or are just there for the sake of having all issues covered.

Rose's anorexia. This is a rather undisclosed subject in the book. Winton puts Rose in the position of being anorexic when her mother, Dolly, goes on a drinking binge and never does any house work and making of food. This forces Rose to take charge, and become what her mother refuses to be. Her father then forces her to eat after he sees what is happening to his daughter. The weird factor comes in where it is never once talked about again. It simply fades into the background of the book as a happening. It is never heavily discussed and the factors of her anorexia are never really disclosed.

Elaine's Marriage: Elaine's marriage is treated as if it is almost trivial. The events leading up to and during the event are not thorough and disjointed. This give the impression that Winton did not wish this wedding to have major emphasis on the novel and its story. When Elaine gets married its almost a relief that he does not have to constantly refer to character in the background.

With all of these events one can't help but ponder why. The conclusion I have come to is that Winton placed these irrelevant events in the novel to portray a language technique. One of a journal, a listing of events, however irrelevant, that shape the characters into what they become. Like life, people die, events happen and we forget, but sometimes we remember some events.
