Balkanization (COT)
In 1912 the term Balkanization was coined and describes the region formerly known as the Balkans. It can be defined as a region broken up into smaller and usually hostile units. The region known as the Balkans is where the Slavs meet the Germans, Greeks, and other different ethnic and religious groups. Due to the major ethnic and religious diversity the region has trouble sustaining stability. During the nineteenth century, many changes and conflicts disturbed the Balkan region. In the diplomatic history of the Balkans a change in diplomacy came across the new forces of nationalism and militarism). Yugoslavia was formed and centered around Serbia and Montenegro; it incorporated most of the south Slavic peoples of the former Austria-Hungarian Empire. The different ethnic groups still found that they were not accepting the treaty and were in conflict with one another. The Serbs wanted to unify the region into a single state, a homeland for all Serbs, and absorb all the other minorities. This created a tension within the Balkans because of the Croats, who have a history within the Habsburg Monarchy; they supported a loose confederation in which all nationalities would be self-governed.
