Studying elements of fiction in "Every Day Use" by Alice Walker.

Alice Malsenior Walker, an African-American writer, was born on February 9, 1944 in Eatonton, Georgia, the eight and youngest child of Minnie Tallulah Grant Walker and Willie Lee Walker. Her parents were poor sharecroppers but tried to help their children to improve. At the age of eight, Alice received a facial scar that caused her to become solitary and timid. In her solitude, she discovered the pleasure of reading stories. At the same time, she began to write poems. After finishing first in her high school class, walker left the rural south to attend to college. She attended Atlanta's Spelman College for women. Years later Walker incorporated this condition into her portraits of Meridian Hill and the students of Saxon College, her fictionalized Spelman. Her second collection of poems the Revolutionary Petunias (1973) became a National Book Award nominee. In 1963 Walker transferred to Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where she broadened her knowledge of the world beyond the south. She graduated in 1965 from Sarah Lawrence and she had resolved to become a writer. In 1966, she had her first publication, "The Civil Rights Movement: How Good Was It?, wh


Alice Walker had a very active life cause she went to study to many different places. First of all one of the factors that lead her to write her fiction was her "southern background" (Baker 400). When she was young around eight years, while playing she was blinded by a bb gun in her right eye, the bb gun also leaved a scar in her face that made her to be shy (Graalman 351). After her accident, she was very lonely and ashamed of her scar and she used to think of kill her self. She thought of her to be an old woman demarcated by the time instead of thinking in what she was back then, a little girl. In her loneliness, she started observing the other people in their environment and right there she learned the pleasure of reading stories, that led her at the same time to start writing poems (Graalman 351).

Mama is very aware of Dee's heritage and also the way she behaves was very different after she meets her male companion. At the beginning of the story, Mama was very proud of her daughter Dee because she was doing an excellent job at school, but when the problem with the quilts began she was very upset with Dee's selfish, egoistical nature (White 5).

Then in the 1970's, the invention in the tape recorders was in continuous evolution. For example, in 1970 Philips introduced its own videocassette recorder (VCR) format in Europe. In 1973,Alice Walker's second collection of poems the Revolutionary Petunias (1973) became a National Book Award nominee (Graalman 350). Then in 1975 Sony introduced in November in the U.S. the Betamax consumer VCR (console only) for $2295 with one-hour 1/2-inch tape cassettes for $15.95. Also, in 1976 Alice walker was divorced and she has receive a Guggenheim Fellowship (1977-1978) to assist her writing of fiction (Graalman 357).

Back in 1944 when Alice Walker was born, the technology and many other things were in evolution. In 1944, the 3M company began doing experiments in this country under Ralph J. Oace.
