Detailed character study of uncle hammer

Uncle Hammer is very much adored by the Logan children.

'We swayed with excitement, then as if by signal we both cried "Uncle Hammer!" and dashed into his arms.'

He spends Christmas season with the Logan's and brings gifts for the children. They always look forward to him coming as we see from the way they act around him.

He is big ma oldest unmarried son, who lives up North and earns a good living, though we are not told what he does. We know he is quite wealthy as he can afford to buy nice things for the children and also owns a Packard, like Mr Grangers but only a few months newer.

"Like papa, he had dark, red-brown skin, a square-jawed face, and high cheekbones; yet there was a great difference between them somehow. His eyes, which showed great warmth as he hugged and kissed us now, often had a cold, distance glaze, and there was an aloofness in him which the boys and I could never bridge."

From this quote we learn that he is very good-looking man and that he shows affection towards the children from the way he kisses and hugs them. He is also very kind to them but even they notice that there is something about him, which makes him very different from their own father. He seems to be very independent

I think he was included in this story by Mildred Taylor to show the different reactions that blacks took when faced with prejudiced white people. Uncle Hammer was not afraid, like most. He was brave enough to stand up for his rights even when threatened, and speak out against the racists. He saw himself as equal and didn't let anyone get the better of him or his family.

"It's a tough world out there, boy, and as long as there are people, there's gonna be somebody trying to take what you got and drag you down. It's up to you weither you let them or not."
