Mary Tudor,

Although through the years Mary Tudor has been named Bloody Mary, she turns out to be one of the kindest Tudors to ever live. Her famed nickname was given to her because of the three hundred (or more) Protestants who were put to death during her reign. (Plowden, p.150)

It was also to the amazement of everyone that she actually got to the throne. (Loades, p.3) First of all many considered her an illegitimate child of Henry VIII, and that she in no way deserved the throne. Also the idea of having only a queen solely rule the kingdom brought an upset to many nobles. ( D.M. Loades) Thirdly she was a sickly woman and well past her prime years(she was 37 when she came to the throne). (Plowden, p.137)

In Greenwich Palace on February 18, 1516, Mary Tudor was born. (BritainSun.com, p.1)Mary was born to Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon. (BritainSun.com, p.1) She was the fifth child to be born to them, but she was the only one of the five to survive past birth. (BritainSun.com, p.1)

She wasn't the healthiest of children either, although this wasn't uncommon during this time period. She was often ailed with headaches and poor vision. (BritainSun.com, p.1) Her parents

Mary never really wanted to get married, but with some encouragement from her friends she decided it was necessary. She chose a Spanish prince, which brought much uproar to England. (Plowden, p. 138) Many feared that by marring an outsider this would open up England to forced Catholicism once again.

After she realized that she would never be able to produce an heir and Philip left her Mary lost all hope. Her strong will and determination that had gotten her to where she was, was slowly beginning to disappear. She began to fall sick frequently, and each time she was ill she never really fully recovered. (BritainSun.com, p.2)

On November 17, 1558 (Plowden, p. 150) Mary finally passed away from a recent bout with influenza. (BritainSun.com, p.2) Her ladies in waiting were comforted only a few hours before she died, because she had told them that she had been playing with children in her dreams. Mary loved children so much and that is why it pained her so when she realized she could never have children of her own.
