The Friendship of Lennie and George
Seemingly complex, because of its uniqueness, Lennie and George actually share a quite simple friendship. Leading the lonesome existence of migrant farmers, they both just long for the love, nourishment, and company of another human. But, because of the burdensome nature of Lennie, this special bond is shortlived. Though they communicate and live much as brothers would, Lennie plays more of a son role to George. Desperate for guidance, he is basically kept alive by George. He turns to George for work, shelter, food, and companionship. Ironically, it seems unlikely that the very man who supplies Lennie with life is the very man to take Lennie's life away. George also protects Lennie though. o find work, he puts himself in a dangerous situation by bringing along Lennie. Unpredictable and easily distracted, Lennie is a bomb awaiting explosion. Because George is able to maintain steady work for Lennie and constantly defends him, Lennie receives a sense of security from his relationship with George. He is calmed by the knowledge that George tends to his needs and has plans for the future that include him. Also, George is a constant role-model for Lennie. Obviously, Lennie emulates George because he often imitates his motions and words. Blabbering on and on to those who will listen, such as Crooks and Candy's wife, he constantly speaks highly of George. He relies on George much as a child relies on a parent.
