Having Our Say

A detailed Summary of Having Our Say

History from eyes I can see through is the first thing I thought after turning the last page. The book took me for a ride through time with the Delany sisters it talked about there brothers and sisters (Lemuel, Julia, Henry JR, Lucius, William, Hubert, Laura, & Samuel) there struggles as kids and as adults. Having Our Say teaches valuable lessons about life that should be a model to live by such as the family, hard work, uplift, & education. it lets you know you accomplish nothing without hard work but with it you can accomplish anything,

I enjoyed the start with the sisters at present day allowed you to become familiar with them so you could relate. You hear a lot of stories of what was going on during slave times so to have a perspective from someone who lived through it and experience it from apart of the country you are from makes it that much easier to relate it gives you a chance to learn history about home.

The parents were key figures in the family as they should you just don't see a lot of that any more. Both parents were from small country towns and experienced a lot of hardships growing up tha

t pushed them to work hard and to help others. Henry Beard Delany was the first elected "Negro" bishop of the Episcopal Church, USA Nanny Logan Delany was the backbone of the family both parents were instrumental in establishing and making St. Aug University what it is today. Being in the position they were in allowed them to be one of the few educated former slaves and this carried over to there family it was a must to all the children. This push translated into ten college-educated professionals at that time in history this was unheard of black or white.

The sisters lived a tuff life to someone reading the book but to them they were living the good life compared to how others were living. Things that we take for granted like education was a privilege at that time it was no privilege for the Delany family it was mandatory. It was understood that everyone would receive college education and would pay for it there self. The sisters went to prominent schools and would not take no for a answer. Bessie went to dentistry school at Columbia University and later became the first black license female dentist in New Y
