Mononucleosis and the Epstein Barr VirusMy aim is to investigate the disease mononucleosis. Epstein Barr Virus causes mononucleosis (mono). This virus will make you sick. It infects the throat and has symptoms such as tiredness, weakness, sore throat, and cough. It affects all age groups and has a big impact on younger and older people. This is a virus which is contagious and will only go away on its own. 1. Epstein Barr Virus is a member of the herpes virus family. It is one of the more common viruses that infects humans. The virus infects the B-lymphocytes and lays dormant until the persons immune system is low. Usually there are not any symptoms when a person becomes exposed to the virus but there are symptoms when the person becomes infected. Majority of people will be infected with this virus at some time in their life. When a teen or young adult becomes infected it is usually in the form of mono, 35%-50% of the time. This virus has been discovered in more then just cases of mono. It is associated with Burkitt's Lymphoma , Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, and non- Hodgkin's Lymphoma. 2. That way if bacterial infection is present the doctor can prescribe an antibiotic. If no bacterial infection is present with mono then antibiotics will not help as mono is a virus. There is no cure for EBV. Medication is not normally needed unless to help ease some of the symptoms. The best way to help get rid of mono is to get plenty of rest and drink a lot of fluids. Mono can take up to 1 month or longer for symptoms to subside.
