Setting the Mood: Scenery in the Quiet Man and December Brid

Scenery in The Quiet Man and December Bride

In Irish films such as The Quiet Man and December Bride, aspects of nature such as scenery and weather implicate the overall moods of the film and personality of the characters. Scenery also depicts Ireland itself in two different ways, since both filmmakers are using an abundance of landscapes, but are representing Ireland's unique environment way.. The Quiet Man, directed by John Ford an American filmmaker, shows Ireland as a tourist attraction and paradise getaway, whereas in December Bride, directed by Thaddeus O'Sullivan, scenery is not quite so rich and green. Both filmmakers used vast landscape in their films, but scenes in The Quiet Man represents Ireland in a cartoonist and unrealistic way that makes the film sort of silly. In December Bride, O'Sullivan uses a certain grayish tone to the scenery making Ireland look sort of stark and not so humble, giving the viewer a different feeling when looking at the landscapes and scenery. This feeling in December Bride is different from the cheerful mood of The Quiet Man. It is almost depressing because of the atmosphere.

The Quiet Man is a film about an Irish-American, Sean Thornton played by John Wayne, r

It also agrees with the, over-done, playful, and sometimes unrealistic love story of Sean Thornton and his heroin Mary Kate.Ireland looks like a paradise, in which it seems it is for the people living in Inisfree, for they never seem to be working or attending to important matters, such as Church. When Sean drags his new wife Mary Kate five miles back to Inisfree, the whole town seems to follow them, as they having nothing else to do, and participate in the typical Irish pub fight that Sean has with O' Danaher. Catholic and Protestant differences are not addressed in this film, for which it would conflict with the generally happy mood of the film. Inisfree also seems to never have bad weather, except for the dramatic scene in which a rainstorm comes down on the two lovers embracing themselves in a passionate kiss. With all these brightly colored scenes which sets the mood of the characters in the film, Ireland is seen as an inviting vacation that is carefree, fun, and certainly GREEN. To a viewer who has not yet been to Ireland, "The Quiet Man is the ultimate expression in a tourist's vision of Ireland".

Seeing Ireland in two different ways by the moods set be landscape and scenery, doors are being opened to the viewer as to what Ireland is really like. The moods set in The Quiet Man by gorgeous scenery is contradicted with the same large landscapes used in December Bride which are dark and dreary. The scenes in December Bride "reimagine the cultural map of Ireland and the Irish differently" from the Irish and Ireland itself in The Quiet Man.

The landscape in this movie matches with the good-humored and witty personality of Sean Thornton. He becomes the center of the town's attention, despite the fact that he is not even a native, and is treated with respect because of his family name. He charms the people of Inisfree , just how the landscape charms the viewe
