Once the decision to re-instate the use of capitol punishment was made, it seemed as though the public developed a strong view and opinion concerning this topic. Not much time pasted before it had those that favored it and those that were against it. There have been many individuals and social groups that have argued many perspectives for and against the death penalty in the past. They argue that the death penalty is a deterrent, public safety is a concern, the execution of the innocent, biases in conjunction with sentencing, and many other issues. The death penalty is considered to be a very controversial extreme that many individuals argue is needed in society, while many others believe it is unethical.

Many people feel that the death penalty is needed in order to put down individuals that post a great threat to the well being of innocent people. Yet, many others still feel that no one person or group of people have the right to pass judgment concerning a life or death sentence onto another person. After conducting some research on the pros and cons of capitol punishment I now feel that the death penalty should be abolished and alternatives should be put into effect. Before writing this paper I felt that the death penalty was needed to keep a balance between the good and bad. Hammurabi's code of law states, "an eye for an eye," but I look at this and wonder if the implied idea is accurate. Are we still that barbaric that there are no other options, and is there really no chance that an individual could return to society as a normal person? The United States should start to seek out other methods that show the world we preserve and care about our citizen's rights involving life.
