Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger and the movie Pleasantville directed by Gary Ross are related in a variety of ways. For instance the main characters in both stories look at the world and see how phony it looks to them. In addition, both the novel and the movie, the sexuality of the era is oppressed by society.

All three of the main characters in both the novel and the movie look and the world that they are in and see how phony and fake it is. In the movie Pleasantville, the main characters are in a modern world and they get transported to a TV show in the past, all of the people in the TV show are too kind and talk different than the main characters so they are considered phony. When you're used to people saying "ya" and "like" all day it is really weird to hear somebody say swell or keen. This different dialect would make anybody think that that person is fake and not normal. In the book Catcher In The Rye, Holden sees everyone that is not exactly like he wants them to be as a phony even though he contradicts himself


many times. "What a school. Your always watching somebody cut their damn toenails or squeeze their pimples or something" (42). This shows that people who do normal things in a homelike environment are considered phony and disgusting to Holden. When Holden is watching the performances he calls the actors phony because they don't act like real people, its there job to act like other people. Actors are phony because they get paid to be someone else so they never develop a real personality and Holden sees through it. Holden is phony too in the way of ordering alcohol at bars and restaurants. Therefore the book and the movie's main characters look onto phony people surrounding them.
