America was formed with the ideology of being free. Americans usually do what they like, even if they're hurting themselves, as long as they're not hurting anyone else. The law only steps in if an innocent bystander is being harmed. This leaves the door open for the second hand smoke attack on smokers. Anti-smokers would like to see smoking banned in public places because of the effects of second hand smoke. While on the other hand smokers would like the right to smoke anywhere, including public places. Perhaps there is a middle ground. Instead of banning smoking from public places buildings where smoking is allowed could be forced to have better filtration systems or separate enclosed rooms for smoking.

Instead of banning smoking in public places perhaps there is a middle ground were both nonsmokers and smokers can agree upon. One idea is enforcing strict rules on business owners. Institute a program where smoking sections are permitted as long as they have a good enough air filtration system to filter sidestream smoke. Scott Roberts, North American sales and marketing manager for Honeywell Commercial Air Products, says "There are new systems which use almost hospital-grade particle-filtration systems that can remove viruses as well as the gas phase of the cigarette smoke." He estimates that a good system, which includes fresh outdoor air, can remove as much as 85 to 90 percent of the second-hand smoke.
