Ditchdigger daughter

In The Ditchdigger¯s Daughters by Yvonne S. Thornton, Thornton portrays the factors in life that young people take through writing about her family. Mr. Thornton, who starts out his family with nothing, raises a total of six children successfully. He works two full-time jobs both day and night to support his family. Though possessing an unusual manner of teaching and guiding his daughters, Thornton nevertheless succeeds. Yvonne, Thornton¯s third daughter, becomes a doctor. After establishing her career, Yvonne writes the book The Ditchdigger¯s Daughters.

According to Mr. Thornton, °When you¯re grown, this society is gonna look at you as an ugly black female...But you are not light, so studyin¯ is the only way I can see you gettin¯ ahead of this±(34). The conversation between Mr. Thornton and his daughters takes place in this quote. As a result of his daughters being black females, Thornton believes that the daughters have to study in order to reach their goals. Mr. Thornton aids in Yvonne becoming a doctor. From The Ditchdigger¯s Daughters, the reader learns that there are three factors that affect the path to which young people take in life.

One of the factors is that there was prejudice in

Another factor was a special event that gave inspiration to the girls to decide what they want to do in future. In The Ditchdigger¯s Daughters, Yvonne Thornton decides that she wants to be an obstetrician: °At that moment I knew that was what I wanted to do when I became a doctor: I wanted to deliver babies±(49). Being an obstetrician is not the career Yvonne expected. She is visiting her Aunt Gloria who is trained as a nurse at the hospital. Yvonne then sees a pregnant woman in the hospital. She wants to be present when °one person becomes two±. When she is in college, there is one more incident that makes her decide to become a doctor. Donna and Jeanette, Yvonne¯s older sisters, also have the desire to be become doctors but fails organic chemistry. After failing the class, they change their mind of becoming doctors, which causes Mr. Thornton to become depressed. Yvonne who loves her father along with not wanting to disappoint him studies hard and passes organic chemistry, which enable her to go to the medical school. Therefore, this event makes Yvonne¯s path towards being a doctor more stronger.

The most important factors that affect Yvonne¯s path are people, such as parents. They are the people who affect young people most among all the other factors. In The Ditchdigger¯s Daughters, Mr. Thornton tells each of his daughters to °pick out a rabbit±(19
