A detailed Summary of The Catcher in the Rye
In the beginning of the novel, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger,
Holden starts off by talking about only things he hates and many parts of the story is continues from that hatred. Holden may seem as though he believes everyone is phony, yet in other cases the story holds characters that Holden truly likes, if not cares for deeply. Though many may not see it, but Holden has a sensitive side to himself. It is difficult for Holden to accept people for who they are, but in this case, Holden accepts everything about a few characters in the novel leaving him to like them.
Within Holden's siblings, he likes Phobe, and Allie, but Holden does not like his older bother, D.B.. During a time when Holden was in need he turned to his sister: "... I damn near gave my kid sister a buz, though. I certainly felt like talking to her on the phone. Somebody with a sense and all..." He loves and respects her completely. Phoebe is the only person in the world who too understands and loves him completely. Holden quotes: "You should see her. You never saw a litt

Also, Allie is another character that Holden likes. Allie is Holden's younger brother who died of leukemia on July 18, 1946. Allie was extremely close to Holden. Holden believes that Allie was "about fifty times intelligent" as anyone Holden has ever known. Even though Holden is older than Allie, Holden still seems to look up to him. Holden says, "Allie was a wizard." Allie had a fielder's mitt that he had written poems all over in green ink to give him something to read when he was in the outfield all alone, Holden keeps the fielder's mitt with him wherever he goes. It is too bad that Holden lost his brother, Allie, who Holden dearly loves.
