The movie OUTBREAK starring Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, and Cuba Gooding jr. incorporates many of the biological concepts discussed in class this year. OUTBREAK involves concepts we have learned such as: Viruses and Bacteria, Human Genetics, Evolution and Mutation, and overall the Immune System of the human body.

OUTBREAK was the idea that a virus from Africa called "Mutoba" whose host was a monkey traveled to America and infection of this deadly disease quickly spread because of the virus Evolving/Mutating from a virus that is only spread by contact to an airborne virus. The virus was first discovered in 1967 in a small village in Zaire that was only a spread by contact. In the movie Rena Russo got the virus a lot earlier then the antiserum was created. This doesn't make any sense, if she got it around a day to two days before the antiserum was created then she would not be able to survive because too many of her cells would be dead.

The virus cannot be stopped without an antiserum because humans cannot develop antibodies to it. The host, which was a monkey from Africa, had the antibodies to both types of the virus. The host monkey had antibodies so that human can use passive immunity. Passive immunity is when a person takes antibodies from another species so that he can use his memory cell to copy those antibodies so he can heal his sickness.
